The Editing Process, Abstracted.

by Michael Craig on 2008/07/25

First pass sentence-level only.
For each sentence, perform the following steps:
1. Using conjunctions and conjunctive-punctuation as a delimiter, indicate each segment graphically.
2. Without prescription, experience each phrase on its own.
3. Bring the entire sentence together for view.
4. Notice how your interpretation of each phrase looks when set together.
5. Make the most striking change you can.
For each paragraph, follow these steps:
6. Bring the entire paragraph together for view.
7. Notice how your interpretation of each sentence looks when set together.
8. Make the most striking change you can.
For each section:
9. Bring the entire section together for view.
10. Notice how your interpretation of each paragraph looks when set together.
11. Make the most striking change you can.

What if you could put a writing editor into a mode that simply highlighted the steps, “zooming in” on the text at each indicated step, consecutively, returning you momentarily to document entry mode to make your edits as you would normally.
I think it would be pretty cool.  I’d do it now, but I am busy with another project or five.  If you do it, though, don’t be a poser.  Please credit me and pay it forward. The content of this blog is under a Creative Commons license.
